Certified Quality Engineer Courses for Industry - 2011

The El Camino College Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) served several businesses during the 2011 fall quarter. The Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) class was offered from November 5th to the 26th, with 14 attendees from various industries taking part. All 14 participants passed & received the American Society of Quality (ASQ) certification.

The CQE class is a prep class for someone wishing to take the ASQ certification exam, which is offered only twice a year. The CQE examination is a 160-question, five-hour exam. It is an industry requirement for many companies, and recertification is required every three years. Certification from ASQ is considered a mark of quality excellence in various industries.  It assists in career advancement and boosts a given organization’s bottom line through employee mastery of quality skills. Becoming ASQ certified is, among other things, a confirmation of an employee’s commitment to quality and the positive impact it will have on their organization.

There are five main domains within the CQE body of knowledge. A CQE is a professional who understands the principles of product and service quality evaluation & control.  This body of knowledge and applied technologies includes, but are not limited to: 1) development and operation of quality control systems, 2) application & analysis of testing and inspection procedures, 3) the ability to use metrology and statistical methods to diagnose & correct improper quality control practices, 4) an understanding of human factors and motivation, 5) a facility with quality cost concepts & techniques, 6) the knowledge and ability to develop & administer management information systems, and 7) audit quality systems for deficiency identification & correction.

Multiple companies participated in the CQE class, including: Boston Scientific, Raytheon, Northrop-Grumman Corporation, RMT Inc, Crane Aerospace, Resmed Motor Technologies, Alcoa Fastening Systems, Advanced Bionics, and Pratt & Whitney.
